Water glass injection for ground reinforcement

Water glass is a chemical solution that binds to the ground, making it more stable and impermeable so that the saturated ground will not run off, settle in a trench or allow water to pass through it. Water glass injection has long been used as a ground reinforcement method to strengthen and stabilize sandy and gravelly ground.

The water glass consists of sodium silicate and glyoxal, which are mixed with water during injection. The concentrations of the different components are always chosen depending on the porosity of the ground on the site and the prevailing conditions. An accelerator—a chemical additive—can speed up the chemical reaction of the water glass mix and affect how long it remains gel-like before hardening.

The water glass mass is injected into the ground using cement injection equipment, along injection pipes that are spaced about half a meter apart. When injecting, it is important that the mass is absorbed slowly for a quality result, and always according to the ground requirements.

Applications of water glass injection

The water glass injection method can replace the more conventional cement injection or stabilization, the construction of retaining walls, or the complete excavation of the site.

If the ground under the old structure is sand or gravel and the ground must be prevented from running off when digging under the foundations, water glass injection is a good choice of method. When building a new structure under an existing one, massive retaining walls are not necessary if water glass injection is used.

In renovation projects, there is often little space on the site and adjacent buildings, and their foundations are close by. Water glass injection is a more suitable method for confined spaces and sites that are particularly sensitive to disturbance.

Water glass injection can also be used as a temporary trench support method in lift shafts and other deeper trenches in ground that is weak or leaking. In these excavations, the ground only needs to be removed from the desired area for the actual molds and castings.
